Sonar Chat app and the Sonar Chat service at sonarchat.xyz · effective 15 October 2026
Sonar Chat does not ask for your phone number, your email address or any account. Your messages are
end-to-end encrypted, so the service that delivers them cannot read them. There is no advertising,
no analytics and no third-party tracker in the app.
No phone numberNo emailNo user directoryNo adsNo analyticsNo background location

What you get instead of an account
You open the app and you are in. It gives you an address to be reached at — no signup, no name,
no number, no password to invent. That address is the whole of your identity here, and if you
never write to anyone, there is nothing else about you to find.
[02]
Messages
Messages, photos, voice notes and shared locations are sealed on your device before they leave it, so
what travels is unreadable to everyone in between. There is no key on our side to hand over, and a
message is removed from our servers the moment your devices have it. What you keep, you keep on your
phone.
[03]
What we do not have
The shortest way to describe this service is by what does not exist on it:
NAME, NUMBER, EMAILNot asked — there is no signup
A COPY OF YOUR MESSAGESSealed on your device
A DIRECTORY OF USERSNone exists — nobody can look you up
WHERE YOU HAVE BEENNot recorded
WHO YOU TALK TONot logged
YOUR ACTIVITYNo analytics, no ad identifiers
AN ARCHIVE TO HAND OVERNone exists
Take our server apart and you would find no conversation in it. Not because it is well hidden —
because we never held one.
[04]
Location
Location is shared when you choose to share it — once, or live for a period you pick. It stops when
you stop it, when the timer runs out, or when the app is uninstalled. Nothing is tracked in the
background, and no history of where you have been is kept.
[05]
Links and previews
When a message contains a link, the preview card is fetched by our servers, never by your phone. The
site being linked to therefore never learns your address, or that you opened the link at all.
[06]
Things Sonar never does
No analytics, no usage statistics, no advertising identifiers, no third-party trackers.
No scanning of your messages — nobody can read them, including us.
No directory and no number lookup — nobody can search for you, and you cannot be found by a number.
No selling, renting or sharing your data with anyone, for any price.
No backup leaving your device unless you export one yourself and move it.
[07]
Your controls
Export a backup of your profile (Settings → Export) and restore it on a new device.
Delete individual messages, whole chats, or all app data by uninstalling.
Block contacts; blocked senders are dropped before anything is stored.
Withdraw your invitation link so it can no longer be used.
[08]
The small print
Three technical details, kept short because they are small:
Delivery. To deliver a message at all, the service handles what every delivery
service handles: who a message is from, who it is to, when, and how big. That is the outside of a
letter we cannot open, and a message is gone from our servers as soon as your devices have it.
Google Play build only. Notifications on that build go through Google's push
service and the app is checked against Google's app-integrity service, so a token and a device
check pass through Google under Google's own policy. Message content is never part of that,
and the direct build uses neither.
If the app crashes, it sends a quiet technical note to our own servers — no
messages, no contacts — so the bug can be found and fixed.

Changes, and who to ask
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Questions about this policy or about the
data our servers hold can be raised with us:

Sonar Chat is a fork of Delta Chat, which is free software. This page is served from sonarchat.xyz;
nothing on it loads from anywhere else.
